I The Great Dictator Photo Series I
Part Eight: The Last Encounter Between Chaplin and Fairbanks
Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin shared decades of friendship together. Shown here, Douglas came to see Charlie on set, as he most always did with Chaplin’s other pictures, and laughed uproariously at the scenes being shot. Soon after these photos were taken, Fairbanks passed away. This was the last time either of them saw one another.
When Chaplin heard of Fairbanks’ death through Mary Pickford, he said, "I’ve lost the inspiration and incentive to make pictures, Mary. You know how much I depended upon his enthusiasm. You remember how I always showed my pictures first to Douglas. More than anything else I remember this: whenever I made a particular scene I would always anticipate the pleasure it would bring Douglas."
